ASREN is a registered, nonprofit, legal entity owned by the Arab National Research and Education Networks NRENs and partners.
ASREN’s vision is about “Pan-Arab collaborative research and education projects and activities, contribute to boost the scientific research, innovation and education levels in the Arab countries by uplifting efficiency and productivity of research and education communities.
ASREN’s mission: “To implement, manage and extend sustainable Pan-Arab e-Infrastructures dedicated for the Research and Education communities and to boost scientific research and cooperation in member countries through the provision of world-class e-Infrastructures and E-services.
EUMEDCONNECT3 provides e-Infrastructure giving high-capacity connectivity for research and education purposes in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region. It enables researchers and academics in these countries to collaborate with their counterparts in the Arab and European research and education communities. Over 40 million users on over 8000 research and education establishments across Europe can be reached via GÉANT.
The EUMEDCONNECT Programme has provided research and education networking within the Mediterranean area since 2004 and countries eligible for EC funding support are shown below. Current EUMEDCONNECT3 connectivity is shown on the topology map. The Programme is interested to extend connectivity to further countries within the Arab regions.
The EUMEDCONNECT3 Project is managed by DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe). DANTE plans, builds and operates advanced networks for research and education. It is owned by European NRENs (national research and education networks), and works in partnership with them and in cooperation with the European Commission. DANTE provides the data communications infrastructure essential to the development of the global research community.
Co-funded by the European Union, AfricaConnect2 follows the successful completion of the AfricaConnect project which helped establish a regional gateway for collaborative research and education (R&E) in Southern and Eastern Africa. It also builds on theEUMEDCONNECT project, which has provided a research and education network for Northern Africa and the Middle East since 2004.
GÉANT is owned by its core membership. This includes 36 National Members, which are European national research and education network (NREN) organisations, and one Representative Member - NORDUnet - which participates on behalf of five Nordic NRENs. Associates are also welcome and include commercial organisations and multi-national research infrastructures and projects.
GÉANT was formed on 7 October 2014, when its members agreed to change the Articles of Association of TERENA, changing its name to GÉANT Association, and the majority of DANTE shares were transferred to the association. The GÉANT Project is a major area of the association’s work and the association is proud to have adopted the GÉANT name.
On 1 May 2015, to coincide with the start of the new GÉANT Project (GN4 Phase 1), the organisation changed its logo and its name from 'GÉANT Association' to simply 'GÉANT'. 'GÉANT' no longer means a single project or organisation, but stands for the entire community collaboration.
Better together
The restructuring marks a new phase in almost thirty years of collaborative research and education networking in Europe.
The main expected benefits of the restructuring are simplified governance, more efficient management, more flexible use of resources and a more inclusive membership. Members, services, operations and relationships with partners and related communities should see no adverse effects. Indeed, this restructuring will strengthen the European research and education networking community as a whole.
The next steps
The TERENATNCGÉANT Project and DANTE websites will continue to provide much information about current as well as past activities until the full, permanent GÉANT website is ready.
Internet2 SIG
The mission of Internet 2 Special Interest Group (SIG) on Emerging National Research and Education Networks is to bring together the international community to address advancing the state of high-performance networking for research and education in underserved places around the world. Internet2 SIG provides a forum for:
  • Sharing information about current initiatives and facilities/data/researchers that need to be reached
  • Sharing challenges, opportunities and successes among both emerging and established NRENs
  • Discussing possible roles for the Internet2 community
Participants are encouraged to share challenges, ideas, opportunities and successful case studies based on their own experiences on the NREN SIG collaboration site.
Currently, there are three active regional interest groups as well as significant interest in 3 other regions. Caribbean Interest Group, South Asia Interest Group, Middle East Interest Group, and Central Asia, Pacific Islands. In the past, the SIG has sponsored a number of workshops focused on emerging NRENs, particularly in SubSaharan Africa and South Asia, and have held several meetings including the First International Platform on Integrating Arab e-infrastructure in a Global Environment e-AGE 2011.
