Abstract: “GMES and Africa: An initiative to integrate and promote the development of local capacities in access to Earth Observation based services in Africa”
The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa (GMES & Africa) initiative is the crystallization of the longstanding cooperation between Africa and Europe in the area of space science & technology, which is one of the key priorities of the long-term EU-Africa Joint Strategy.
The rationale of this long-term and strategic cooperation is to address the growing needs of African countries to access and use Earth Observation (EO) data for the implementation of sustainable development policies on the continent through the integration and deployment of African requirements and needs in Copernicus Services.
Through training, which is one of the pillars, the programme aims to educate users on how to utilize EO products and services for informed decision-making.
The objective of this presentation is to present possible opportunities offered by the GMES programme in terms of data sharing, training, capacity building, but also to present possibilities for collaboration in EO field for a wide range of service users the African continent.
