eduroam successfully deployed across Oman

Oman Research and Education Network (OMREN) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI) has successfully deployed eduroam in 32 locations in the Sultanate distributed among universities, colleges and research centers.

eduroam (education roaming) is a wireless roaming service that provides free Internet access to the research and education community globally. eduroam allows students, researchers and academics within the Sultanate of Oman to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply connecting and using the same credentials used in the home institution, regardless of location worldwide.

With the activation of eduroam in Oman, statistics indicated that the service has been used for more than 500k times in 2021 by students and researchers connected to the service.

OMREN aims to further extend the reach of eduroam to public areas across several locations in the Sultanate. Mrs. Warda Al Habsi, OMREN Acting Director said: “With the support of strategic partners and authorities concerned, OMREN will work to expand the service nationwide for the benefit of the Omani research and education community with an aim to create extended virtual campuses and offer users multiple options to go online and connect to their institutions.”

Oman Research and Education Network (OMREN) is a central part of a sustainable infrastructure that contributes to the emergence of an effective national innovation ecosystem. It provides the research and education community in the Sultanate of Oman with a common network and collaboration infrastructure adapted to their needs.
